Climate and Energy

“In the face of a global climate emergency we must move swiftly to reduce GHG emissions and enhance our region’s resiliency to the effects of a changing climate” (SCRD 2019-2023 Strategic Plan).

The Sustainable Development Division is fostering a climate-conscious and climate-ready community by integrating climate change mitigation and resilience practices into all aspects of the SCRD’s operations.

SCRD will lead by example and make corporate activities carbon neutral. A detailed plan to achieve carbon neutrality is under development.

The Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP 2009) aims to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the community, through implementing a range of actions. It is based on a Community Energy and Emissions Inventory that was updated in 2012.

Recognizing these documents need an update, the SCRD is undertaking a new Community Energy and Emissions Inventory that will help feed a community-wide discussion on an updated Community Climate Action Plan. To lay the groundwork for this discussion, a scan of existing activities and climate risks is being completed.
